An analogy:
For years, high-functioning drug addicts have played a game of drug-fueled musical chairs. The drugs are certainly killing them, but they hide the damage, spreading it to those around them, while enjoying the game and drugs. It's been great for the addicts and the dealer, but at everyone else's expense.
One day, a bystander, tired of only getting the externalized downsides, joins in. They're not a high-functioning addict; they play aggressively and take extra risks. They consume too many drugs. They break the rules the high-functioning addicts have agreed to and play against them. This pisses off the addicts and the dealer because it might end the game early.
GME is so fiat.
