I spent the day 'wedge inoculating' a bunch of oaks that Helene brought down. Here in the Piedmont area of SC, the wind was up to 70mph. Our oaks are not used to those winds & it brought down the largest of them. I'd say at least 30% of all oaks over 100yrs old were pulled out of the ground. Most of the small trees were fine.
This'll be a keystone event for the ecology around here, whole acres of formerly hardwood-covered skies are now completely clear, 10ish% sun to 50-100% sun, overnight.
Anyway, I'm going to try & turn it into an opportunity by inoculating the bones of these old guys with oyster mushrooms. Some trees were over 3ft in diameter, I could be picking mushrooms off the trunks for 30 years.
Also excited for epic Papaw harvests.
