A book is a time capsule that lets you touch minds. Unless it’s a #DRM nightmare, in which case, a book is a license.

I had a quick look at https://theyseeyourphotos.com/ The premise is that one uploads a photo and the Google photo API provides an idea of location, gender, age, income, political leaning and potential products that could be targeted to the character in the picture.
Well, it is as accurate as the horoscope. If the photo has no geolocation will wildly guess and, depending on the formality of the photo, will scale salary up or down. Pff.

Every once in a while I watch Ursula Le Guin's speech when she received the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters in 2014. It's a great reminder.

""Technology changes quickly, people's minds change slowly. So, it's easy to adopt new technologies, it can be hard to adopt new ways of thinking" - Bret Victor in The Future of Programing.
I've watched this presentation a few times and each time I learn something new.

My daughter is studying for a NZ driver's license and shared this gem: "Roads can include any places the public have access to."
To quote her, "they showed me a football field and asked if it was a road and I said no and they said actually legally it is because the public can access it."
A "road" in the Land Transport Act 1998 includes "A place to which the public have access, whether as of right or not".

The Waka Kotahi website clarifies that the intention of NZ's incredibly broad legal definition of road is not so that New Zealanders can drive everywhere, but instead "to ensure that the public are protected from the misuse of motor vehicles, even in areas where we would not ordinarily expect to find motor vehicles".

I'm seeing a lot of reckons about #Mastodon vs. #BlueSky, bagging #libre developers for 'not getting what's important to users' of social media with Mastodon. In doing so, the reckoners are demonstrated the fact that they neither understand libre software communities or the motivations of devs, nor do they realise they're demanding something from people who owe them nothing. They're treating libre software as if it's focus is more users & profit. Seems a weirdly entitled position to me.

nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpq6uk4yyw47haxwl0klhh7lcx3qatkyqmpc6gc4hwru3qedaeuueequhs06p Funny thing is that BlueSky is, in essence, a centralised, single-point-of-failure social network, with investors that at some point will want a return on their investment. That's a main driver for future enshittification.
I have an account there to keep track of part of NZ's Twitter migrants, but I do not plant to invest much time there.

"Rival unions for teachers, nurses and doctors launched by anti-vaccine figures"
Proving that there are no limits for bullshit.
Looks like a bullshit organisation.
The 'saving $300 p.a. and a 20% pay increase through decentralising' sounds like all those promises years ago when unions were largely dismantled in NZ. The reason they would be able to get good pay would be based on the AU figures, in where they piggy-back off the union successes.
And a NZ union address being a PO Box in Queensland.
Finally not able to conduct workplace bargaining - well that'll get a raise. Only on the backs of those involved in the collective bargaining.

Here's Marley's Hill in the Port Hills of Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, as seen from our house. The photo of it on fire is this morning, the other I took on Saturday.
I've been taking photos of this view every fortnight from our deck, watching how the hill has been recovering from the 2017 Port Hills fire. The clock has just been reset.
See Flickr for the full-res photos if you want to zoom in.

@npub17nc...9dam I heard that part of the fire affected the restoration with natives done after the previous fires. Do you know if that's the case?
@npub1tdj...cvf4 Interesting. No, I've not heard that yet. I've been wondering how the young native plantings have fared. It would be a shame if we've lost some of them.

And here's the same view of Marley's Hill in the Port Hills, Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, the year after the 2017 Port Hills fire, when the dead trees had been clear away.

Someone somewhere was showing calculations for how many (few) years we would delay climate change via planting trees.
Does anyone remember seeing that post and point me to it?

Let me know if you find it. This is a subject I find very interesting. A suspect a lot of the figures that get thrown around underestimate the carbon-sink potential, by only accounting for the carbon in the trees themselves. Not in the soil, undergrowth, fauna, etc.
