It is a display of power: You as an artist, an animator, an illustrator, a writer, any creative person are powerless. We will take what we want and do what we want. Because we can.

[Question] Is there social tagging in Nostr?
40 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
This sounds like something I was suggesting for Amethyst. Visually, I don't know how to display it necessarily, but I do think there is a lot of value in independent user tagging. This would make hell threads more than a list of users. As well, it would clean up a lot of stray kind-1 events which only exist to "include" a user in the discussion, or otherwise bring their attention to it

I see. This is for personal indexing or what? I'm referring more toward npubs and users being tagged.

I agree that tag users for personal use, could make sense.
40 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
Yes, what is the reason to tag notes?

Hell threads are users attacking relay operators, who give up their time, to work for free. It's like going to a soup kitchen and throwing soup in the chef's face. Because they can. I understand tha aim is that the chefs, who work without pay, will improve their defenses. But a more likely outcome is that, when users throw soup in their face, they will just do other things with their free time.
43 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
What is it about hell threads that put a load on relay operators? Aren't they just a bunch of notes linked together as opposed to a bunch of notes not linked together? It is early for me maybe my brain isn't awake yet.

Nothing not sure what the hell Melvin is talking about (pun intended)
43 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
how so
43 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
Most relay operators dont get paid. Damus is an exception in that respect.
43 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
Running a relay is like $20/month for a vps?
43 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
There's a bit more to it than that. Damus is generously subsidized. Most relay operators are not so fortunate. Ends.
43 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
What you’re saying is nonsensical. You don’t need to be β€œgenerously subsidized” for a $20/month server charge.
40 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
Unlike you I am not a grant holder and so I have to either beg the public for server costs every month and I'm not getting paid to write or maintain the code. That plus other unanticipated costs, means I have to shell out ~$1k+ a year just to keep the service running plus backups etc. Its a steep cost and I'm also unlikely to ever get a grant fwiw.
So any amount of subsizing is good, if the public doesn't want to donate then its paywall time and if the paywall doesn't cover then its time to move on and either sell the project or work on more substantive work that has more impact for my spare ~10 hrs a week.
not every dev is going to get subsidized, meanwhile plebs are constantly using a service like crazy and demanding it be FREE FREE FREE.... at some point its not worth the tax write off anymore (too steep a cost).
43 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
Let's agree to differ. $20 a month is a lot of money to some people.
42 hours agoβ€’β€’β€’
Then ask for donations.

In retrospect, the main value of did-nostr is its ability to unify Nostr and Bitcoin primitives within a single JSON object. This not only enables a 10x–100x architectural scaling potential for both systems, but also unlocks advanced use cases like on-chain zaps, trustless atomic swaps, decentralized contracts, consistent profiles and agentic Nostr.
That said, I’m not entirely satisfied with the current DID specβ€”there are a couple of tweaks that would make a real difference. Still, it’s a significant improvement over what we have today, and those edge cases can be fixed later.
2 days agoβ€’β€’β€’
This is really cool. Can you elaborate on the correlation between DID and consistent profiles?

Great question! Nostr is a "spray and pray" protocol so you never can know if you have the latest profile in any app. In fact some apps have realized this and dont even let you follow somone because it might over write your follow list. This is why the dream of interop is broken under the nostr system. Me personally, my profile has been destroyed so many times, that I will only use one app now. DID documents can have consistent profiles, modulo a bit of discovery (which I skirted over in my explanation) to allow users to be able to store and update their latest profile, and distribute it as a DID doc. The discovery piece requies a bit of work, but no more than a day's work. NIP-05 was built in a day for example. So, now that the base did-method is there, we can extend it to meet the use cases that apps need. If that makes sense?

Sign me up. This is why I stopped working on my client with nip-42 support. Too many headaches derive from the profile metadata madness. Whois shouldn't be so difficult.. and I have come to realize that even event signers still need some levels of redundancy, or perhaps the entire process of event signing..
Is this something that needs worked into strfry to be supported or is it a client-server relationship? I see it specifies a relay in the spec to retrieve the DID. I assume your profile has no metadata for me on amethyst (profile pic) because only the client you mentioned supports the spec. Is your app out there somewhere? Would love to try it out and review whatever is available.
Could we extend a type of nip-42 auth using these DIDs?
2 days agoβ€’β€’β€’
This is very cool bedrock of the bedrock stuff. How do the steps actually go? I'm aware of the W3C DID Working Group but that's about it. You present it somehow, and if you've got all the bits and pieces together and clearly laid out then they might reference it somewhere?
