What's everyone recommend for a self-hosted personal cloud server these days?
I am currently running my old @npub1agh...mhct node for this purpose, after uninstalling all the Bitcoin related services, but it's less than ideal since it is very limited running on a R-Pi 4 with only 4G of RAM. My @npub126n...e9ll is now my dedicated Bitcoin node and I would prefer to keep it dedicated to Bitcoin related services only.
So, I am looking for something separate to run NextCloud, Plex, Immich, and such, with the ability to access services via Tailscale, Tor, or clearnet on a per service basis, and maybe move my Haven relay over to that device, too. Should I just build a beefier rig running Umbrel OS, or would something else be better? Should I just wait until Start9 releases their next version with more options for remote connection and set up a separate Start9 server for this use-case, even though no one has any idea when that will be and I've been waiting over a year already? Is there another OS I should consider instead?
What hardware should I be looking at for this use-case? A Nuc or some other mini-pc? Looking to keep this around $500-$1,000.

I use a used Lenovo Mini PC and I've set that up with Proxmox in order to be able to run various VMs to do whatever I want. ( But I'm bad at this so it takes forever, LOL.)

Not a dumb question! Yes you can, as far as I know. At least on Android devices. I've never used nostr on apple. Amethyst supports it in the app and I believe Orbit solves this for others. Many relays have tor addresses.

ELI5 please, why not just use Mullvad? They accept Lightning now. Isn't all they see just an IP, too? Is it that they can log it? You can log the IP and relay it to them, can't you?
It is basically two points of failure instead of one. Neither of them has the full picture on their own so they would have to collude to link you with your web traffic.
I don't see it as having two points of failure. You're just shifting it, from Mullvad to Obscura.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought in this scenario obscura has your IP, but not the web traffic/public IP. Mullvad knows web traffic/public IP, but not yours. Neither knows both so neither can individually link an individual to their web traffic.
But Obscura can in principle relay my IP to Mullvad and then Mullvad has the full picture. So it is like a condom on Mullvad’s offering? 😁 Is that the idea?
Thats what I meant about collusion. In principle, they could do that. But the incentives don't really line up. Once that happens, business dries up.

One of the key features we're exploring is fine-grain split-tunneling, which may solve a lot of the problems people have with IP reputation. E.g. "I don't really care if I'm not on the VPN for Amazon Prime, but I do want to be on it for everything else"
Yeah I tried to be VPN only but it was so inconvenient due to sites blocking me when I needed to complete life living tasks!
