Nostr newb here. A couple of questions: How do zaps work, is there a limit to using them? And, what’s the purpose of the relays being shown?

tried to zap your audiosurf post (cuz audiosurf is cool) but i get an error when zapping you, just fyi
730 days ago•••
That’s weird. I have the lightning hash setup and am able to zap others. Do I have to verify my account?
you have an ln invoice in your nostr profile (looks like 'lnbc...'). It should be an lightning address. (looks just like an email adress). Update it so nostriches (and ducks) can zap you⚡⚡
729 days ago•••
Thanks for taking a look. It should have already been updated. I just tried updating it again, not sure if that did anything.
still not updated here... will check later and zap you...
not sure which app you use but dont forget to press the save button
729 days ago•••
I’m using Damus. I tried removing it and saving and it didn’t save as removed. So I’m now wondering if my update is getting saved.
Damus latest version? Check the appstore. Alternately you could try update on https://iris.to . Always worked for me.

let me check your profile data

Okay, never mind on the zaps. And I just found out I can’t edit or delete posts.

"Why is everyone talking about pronouncing nostr?"
Well, @jack used a bunch of big words and said someone pronounced nostr correctly, so that is all we got out of it
🤙

Because Nostr came from ‘Nostradamus’ (along, obv w/ Damus). So it was pronounced Nostra for about a month until it broke big.
Let’s not allude to how Doge came to be mispronounced Dowdge, but its something to think on.
Yeah, I tried to tell people it’s nostr(a), but that’s not even being considered 😂

It was actually the podcast with @npub1az9...m8y8but there’s nothing I can do about that now 😕

Has he played Audiosurf? It’s also a fun music beat game!

Hint: it’s a rhythm game, whatever that means lol

I just published a blog post about #Nostr, where I discuss my first impressions, compare it with ActivityPub, and explore the possibilities of Zaps. I'm absolutely loving it so far! https://dri.es/nostr-love-at-first-sight Feedback welcome!

Just promoted my Nostr blog post on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Dries/status/1626222882874593280 Not sure how that makes me feel …
747 days ago•••
I'm new to Nostr, but working on a blog post about it. Given my reach in the web community, I'd like to include a basic comparison with ActivityPub. I want my comparison to be fair and balanced and would appreciate any feedback that you may have. 🙏🏼 Screenshot with my current draft: . #nostr #activitypub /cc @jack @jb55

I'll copy-paste my draft here as well:
--8<---
To start, I would like to emphasize that Nostr and ActivityPub are commendable for their efforts in addressing the problems encountered by traditional centralized social media platforms.
* Nostr employs hash-based identification for users, while ActivityPub utilizes a more conventional user account system. ActivityPub user accounts are based on domain names, which can be controlled by third-party entities. Nostr's hash-based identification system is more decentralized, as it does not rely on domain names controlled by outside parties.
* Migrating to a different Mastodon server can be challenging as your username is tied to the domain name of the current Mastodon instance. However, this is not a problem in Nostr as users are identified using a unique hash.
* The Nostr protocol is easier to implement than the ActivityPub protocol, and appears more extensible. What I like about Nostr is what I like about RSS: it's simple and extensible.
* ActivityPub protocal has some artchitectural challenges; when you post a link to a site, that sites gets hammered with requests. (Any other architectural challenges?)
Depending on your views on censorship, the following could be good or bad:
* In ActivityPub, Mastodon server owners have the power to ban users. In Nostr, users can't be banned. Conversely, in Nostr, users cannot be banned, but either Nostr clients or Nostr relays may opt to block specific users or messages. This is a distinct approach compared to a network-wide ban.

Outside of the technology, I think the big difference is the network effects. Right now, it feels like most of my interest network moved to Mastodon, whereas most of the legitimate conversation I’m reading on nostr is about developing nostr (not lost on me that it’s because nostr dev is most of my follows, but a bit of a chicken & egg problem as my network isn’t here).
I’m wondering if it’d be possible to allow for interoperability between both (more than just crossposting).

I completely agree, but Nostr is still in its early stages.
Although I believe the Nostr protocol is superior to ActivityPub (as noted in https://dri.es/nostr-love-at-first-sight), protocol superiority is not enough for Nostr to win.
In order for Nostr to become a viable alternative to Twitter and Mastodon, the overall end user experience needs to improve dramatically.
And the ultimate user experience for Nostr is this: engaging, thought-provocing, cutting-edge conversations across a diverse range of interesting topics.
Currently, these types of conversations have been infrequent on Nostr.
To improve the overall end-user experience, two things are necessary: (1) we need significant improvements to Nostr clients to make them more polished and user-friendly, and (2) we need to attract more interesting people that can bring along a more diverse user base and community.
It is impressive to witness the rapid progress that @jb55 is making with the Damus client. I'd shift more investment to Damus. Specifically, I'd love to see @jb55 surrounded with more UX testers and UX researchers. Clients like Damus are the gateway to Nostr.
Over the past few years, a significant number of leaders in web development and the Indieweb community have migrated to Mastodon. This shift was largely driven by the alignment of their values with the open and decentralized nature of Mastodon. As a result, Mastodon has become the primary hub for the most engaging web development conversations today.
In my opinion, the web development community would be an excellent early adopter for Nostr. The same reasons that prompted their adoption of Mastodon could apply to Nostr as well.
Furthermore, the web development community played a key role in Twitter's early success, as @jack may recall. I personally became a Twitter user in 2007, when the platform was less than a year old, after a conversation with Ev Williams and Larry Page.
The web development community could be a valuable target audience for Nostr. Not only are they technically savvy and able to navigate through difficult-ish user interfaces, they can also brings some more diverse and engaging conversations. Additionally, web developers have the ability to create integrations that can enhance the reach of Nostr. Since I blogged about Nostr on my site, two Nostr integrations have been created for Drupal already.
Furthermore, the web development community has a strong presence online, which can lead to increased visibility and promotion of Nostr through their blog posts, website links, and social media. Overall, targeting the web development community seems to be an opportunity for Nostr.

For those that primarily work from home and/or remotely - How do you find focus in your day? I’ve been doing this for 3 years now which is crazy to think about but I’m still admittedly not very good at staying focused on the task at hand. Twitter/nostr/telegram/bitcoin price/routing node/cleaning/eating, etc. etc.
I’m very good at distracting myself and getting distracted. Tips? Tricks? What works and what doesn’t for you?

I’ve been working remotely for over 10 years and I would say the key elements are: timeblocking, inbox zero and change of environment as needed… and enjoying what you do helps too 😄oh and… I do have to put Damus away sometimes lol
733 days ago•••
I like this. Can you elaborate on the time blocking and inbox zero? I have noticed getting out of the house simply to a coffee shop every now and then can help spur motivation for me
733 days ago•••
Spur motivation and stay focused I should say *
733 days ago•••
For sure that time outside of your reg work area is key. Inbox zero is all about filtering content so you aren’t staring at an inbox piled high with tasks. This is an oldie but still has some good stuff in it https://youtu.be/z9UjeTMb3Yk and time blocking is using your calendar is reasonable blocks to keep you on track and avoid distractions. It’s like a scheduled to-do list…
732 days ago•••
I’m going to watch the video, I can relate so much to the concept of staring at piled high tasks and choosing to distract myself from them because there are so many, instead of digging in. Thank you!
