If I set up a single signature cold card with sparrow will I be able to upgrade it to a multi sig in the future or will I need three new devices?
In theory you can. For me personally, I think it’s better to just get 3 new devices and sweep all the bitcoin from your single sig to the new multi sig setup. It keeps things simple. Since a multi sig setup is likely securing a large amount of funds, the cost of an additional device should be relatively small
582 days ago•••
Do you suggest using different devices or is 3 cold cards a good option?
I think it’s a good option, however I’m not sure I’m qualified enough to suggest a particular multi sig setup. It’s hard for me to weigh trade offs, in this case of locking into a single vendor. I have personally found more peace in using a company like Casa or Unchained, who are experts at making those types of decisions and make it super easy to setup

Separate vendors mitigate the risk of a retirement attack.
Say both secure elements of every MK4 are compromised. (very low probability, IMHO) Let's say every seed gets transmitted to Coinkite via some backdoor Wi-Fi attack. (Again, very unlikely.)
If you have a multisig wallet made of a seed signer, bitbox02, and a cold card, you have nothing to worry about.
If you have three cold cards, you have a problem.
I think it's reasonable to use a cold card plus two or more other wallets from different companies or build your own, but I encourage you to read Fkaxman's guide yourself.

What do you think of the guide? I browsed a lot of it and think it brings up some good points and explains certain aspects of multi sig well. However, the paper wallet/keystone choices seem non-ideal and overall like it may be out of date/not very well maintained. Also, seems like it would take a long time to set up.

At the time he wrote it, there were not many hardware wallets with secure elements. Originally, the Cobo vault was recomended. Then the Cobo vault broke. Keystone is a fork of Cobo vault.
There are better options now. I would use a seed signer instead of seedpicker. There are issues with air gapped computers, but multi-sig mitigates these risks.
You could also use a Foundation device these days too.

I think we can trust cold card and block stream jade as far as I know

Thank you for that guide!

I use different devices. I grocked Flaxman's guide over the pandemic.

Chapter 5 of learning bitcoin from the command line is about transactions that get stuck, usually because too low of a fee. I’m going to do a side tangent today of learning as much as I can about tx replacement, rather than blowing through the chapter.
Worked through the first 4 chapters of Learning bitcoin from the command line (https://github.com/BlockchainCommons/Learning-Bitcoin-from-the-Command-Line). I couldn’t figure out setting up a node on Linode, so just ram bitcoin locally on regtest. Overall, the chapters were good and I learned a bunch, though were some parts that were a little rough and out of date. Keeping guides/docs up to date is super hard, especially when they are for free. I think there will be a large bitcoin technical teaching industry in 5-10 years

Eh?
"bogosize" : n, (numeric) A meaningless metric for UTXO set size
(part of the help for the RPC gettxoutsetinfo)
I've just run it and it does indeed return this stat. What is it?
Looks like it gives a stat for the utxo set. Each utxo is 50 + the size of the scriptPubkey. https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/pull/10426/files
583 days ago•••
Classic descriptive PR 😅
Thanks for the help all. Indeed 'database-independent measure of size' is something that makes sense, albeit it's a bit obscure of course.
Some legacy approximation of disk size. IIRC it came close to being removed. Try searching for in the github issues.

Having a party at my apartment tonight. The goal is to not bring up bitcoin unless someone asks. And if they do, be encouraging but not too crazy sounding. After a few drinks this gets very hard
585 days ago•••
Report back how it went 😁
Roger that 🫡 🤞
That was my goal too. Two hours and a few drinks and now I can’t stop talking😬😅

It looks like swan and river both offer only recurring buys, rather than direct deposit. Recurring buys just don’t hit the same as direct deposit. I think I will wait until Strike is back to operational for DD rather than switch.
Swan has direct deposit
You are right, thanks! The navigation to the dashboard was not intuitive to me but pretty terrible research on my part 😅
586 days ago•••
No worries! Agreed it could be an easier UX
586 days ago•••
Some bomb tacos
put your #Bitcoin in cold storage.
if you receive direct deposit to strike, be sure to disable that for now
586 days ago•••
Strike doesn't use Prime Trust anymore afaik
586 days ago•••
As part of their transition off Prime trust, their direct deposit functionality won’t work for a bit. They emailed people today telling them to update their payroll provider info
586 days ago•••
Damn. I loved direct deposit with strike. I could withdraw instantly. Guess I will try to set up with river.

Second one much better. Proper ratio and the water to dissolve
587 days ago•••
Old fashioned perhaps🧐
Yup! My first venture into cocktails. Need some more practice
587 days ago•••
If you want any specs on any cocktails. Let me know. It's what I do for a living.
That’s awesome! Do you put the cherry in it? If so, should it be specifically the luxardo maraschino cherry? Also, do you have a favorite whiskey?
Are you pure of heart?
Definitely not
I hear you.
Drinking an old fashioned for my back pain. Messed it up though and didn’t add water so the sugar didn’t dissolve enough.

What website do you use for sats conversion?

I’ve been wanting to play around with pwas so I made one this week for sats/usd. https://mattoshibtc.github.io/satconvert/

It’s the absolute best watching how quickly this space pivots. Censoring is a problem? Oh, we’ll build our own decentralized media platform and call it Nostr, allowing anyone to run a relay from across the globe and contribute to hosting the network.
Taking away our ability to transact value for value in a truly peer to peer fashion where there is ZERO need for a middle party to take their fee/cut? We’ll just focus on spreading the word about Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) and improve this technology to avoid the fucking Apple App Store all together.
It’s truly fascinating, the intelligence and innovation in the #bitcoin space all while maintaining a common value for avoiding centralization. I love being a fly on the wall just trying to keep up
595 days ago•••
I feel the exact same way. I just installed my first pwa (stacker news) right before reading this!
Hell ya. How do you do it? I would love to give it a shot with stacker news
595 days ago•••
Open safari (must be safari)->navigate to stacker.news->click the share icon->click add to Home Screen
595 days ago•••
That’s only for iOS. Slightly different if you have android
595 days ago•••
Damn that was easy and it’s pretty slick! Exciting stuff thanks!

My biggest question was how OP_CHECKMULTISIG matches up the provided signatures with the corresponding public keys. The answer is that it just loops through the public keys and tries to verify the signatures! In my mind I thought there would be some type of mapping. It was also surprising to me that even if you have a threshold of valid signatures, they need to be in the right order. These resources together did a great job explained the nitty gritty: https://learnmeabitcoin.com/technical/p2ms https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/40669/checkmultisig-a-worked-out-example https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/src/script/interpreter.cpp#L1105
