I read a book called How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying.
There is a woman from Earth named Davi who is the chosen one and she is stuck in a time loop in a fantasy world. Every time she dies, she wakes up in a forest pond and an old wizard finds her and says the prophecy is for her to save the world.
She has lived 237 of these lifetimes, totaling over 1,000 years, and can never win. The dark lord and his horde always wins, no matter what she tries. She has understandably become quite cynical. Her personality is like Deadpool now; she takes nothing seriously, constantly jokes about things, and breaks the fourth wall.
So as she is getting tortured in the dungeon of the dark lord on life #237 after yet another multi-year attempt that failed, she decides she is fed up with this. Instead of trying to defeat the dark lord and save the kingdom, she will instead join the bad side and become the dark lord.
So after finally finding a way to kill herself and end the torture, she wakes up in the forest pond again. When the wizard comes to find her, she kills him and then heads into the forest to start her journey to work up the bad guys ladder. Kind of like Groundhog Day she has so much accumulated experience (fighting, magic, combat tactics, knowledge of what events will happen when) and she can iterate when she fails, so she sets off on this new journey to become Dark Lord Davi.
So the story follows her as she builds a bigger and bigger army (she insists on calling it a horde, since dark lords have hordes) and adventures across the world accumulating power.
Funny stuff.

MicroStrategy's bitcoin acquisition strategy has been really on-point.
I analyze a lot of stocks and see how they manage their shares. Most companies are rather pro-cyclical in this aspect. They buy back a lot of shares when times are good and shares are expensive, and then when there's a recession they reduce or eliminate their share repurchases, ironically when shares are cheap and it would be better to buy them.
A small percentage of companies have more forward-thinking executives that manage to do this more counter-cyclically. They buy back more shares then they are cheap, and they retain more cash or do other things with their cash when their shares are more expensive.
MicroStrategy has been doing this quite well, except it's about the strategy of issuing shares for bitcoin, which if bitcoin continues to be successful will have more impact overall.
When MicroStrategy wants to buy more bitcoin (which is always), what they seem to be optimizing for is how many bitcoin can they get per share. That's what builds shareholder value in this context. So when MicroStrategy stock is trading at a valuation premium relative to its underlying bitcoin, they can take that opportunity to issue more of these expensive shares, and buy bitcoin with those proceeds. When there is not a valuation premium, they can focus more on just buying bitcoin with incoming cash flow, or exploring other low-cost financing.
So far, they have been really on-point about managing this.

Is Bitcoin Beethoven or Bach?
I’ll bite :) From the lens of “Bitcoin the invention/revolution”, it is closer to Beethoven as his music marked a big departure from the classical period (into the romantic area). However Bach is known for the mathematical precision of his compositions as well as their adherence to strict rules which mapped very well to “Bitcoin, the money backend by math (cryptography) with rules and no rulers.“

Too many people have given Elon a pass. Don't give him a pass.
He's a marketer, not a founder or an engineer. He didn't found PayPal or Tesla; he bought into them early. He's good at selling narratives and equity valuation for perpetually unprofitable companies.
Everything for him is a narrative. His green revolution was a narrative to sell more cars and get more subsidies. His bitcoin purchase was to gain appeal among bitcoin/crypto people in a bull market. And he shilled doge like a dumbass. His SpaceX narrative is to get money from the government.
His rooftop solar thing was an outright scam; the technology isn't ready and went nowhere because of that. His full-self-driving-in-an-intermediate-term timeline was a scam, and is going nowhere because of that. He makes scams to draw people and capital in, because for him it's all about narratives and equity valuation.
And then he dug unproductive holes, suggested unproductive hyper-tubes, built meme flamethrowers, for what? It's a narrative, not a business. None of this is real productive shit to make peoples' lives better.
His latest "we need free speech" narrative was a scam too. He tapped into something real, which is what marketers do and why it kind of worked. Yes, we need free speech. Yes, Twitter had censorship issues. He saw that and jumped on it maliciously rather than productively.
But what did he replace it with? He replaced it with arbitrary journalist censorship about his private jet, arbitrary censorship of Substack, selective Twitter Files release, won't talk seriously about any of his China connections because Xi Jinping fucking owns him economically there like Jack Ma, has his balls firmly in his grasp, etc.
Elon's playing the narrative, the anti-woke meme of the day. He's a master meme-momentum-player. Don't fall for it.

I didn’t realize that most of his things are scams.
I was excited about a lot of things he’s working on, but after the Thai cave rescue thing where he called a critic a pedophile and then hired a PI to try to actually dig up dirt on the guy - I lost respect for him.
When he started shilling DOGE I realized how shallow he can be with his thought process. Clearly vapid in some areas.
When he acquired Twitter and started censoring links to competing social media platforms, I realized he is also a hypocrite in areas that he seems to think deeply about.
Then I always tried to stay neutral on the China thing, but it’s true that he never criticizes Xi or the communist party, while always criticizing US politicians.
As a user of Starlink, I’m pretty happy with what he’s doing there.
I also appreciate what he did with Tesla , he got the momentum going with electric vehicles and his story of putting everything on the line for Tesla was inspiring - but he did make more money being close to the money printer for bogus carbon credits which was more profitable than selling the cars.
It’s very tough to continue respecting him as time goes on and he keeps benefiting from the money printer while doing -rep things for bitcoin, a technology that can actually change the lives of people worldwide.
Def don’t give him a pass.

Great post @Lyn Alden - one you forgot and might be biggest of all.
Capturing the benefits of an inflationary monetary system (versus advocating for those benefits to flow to society through #Bitcoin) in order to build artificial intelligence that he owns….while pretending to care about regulating AI to slow others down (because he is behind openai)
I unfollowed him long ago because I realized almost everything he said was in service of his narcissism and control versus the greater good for society.

“His SpaceX narrative is to get money from the government.”
You can tell SpaceX is Elon's most successful project because Lyn has to say the least about it. 😂
SpaceX is selling the US (and many other) governments a much needed service at an unprecedented low price. If course he's getting money from the government. The US and EU need launch services and SpaceX selling them.
BTW here's SpaceX's list of recent launches: https://www.spacex.com/launches/
As you can see it's mainly communication satellites, both government and commercial.

Are badges the Shitcoin of Nostr?
Right now, people are having fun creating badges, awarding badges, and of course receiving badges. Anyone can create them for any reason. Anyone can apply a value for them. There's an infinite supply of them. If this sounds familiar, that's because it's all of Bitcoiners counter-arguements against Shitcoins and NFTs. (We've all said these things.)
Badges aren't intended to be used in this capacity though. Badges are meant to be useful indicators. For example: If you're attending a conference, you'll be awarded a badge. If you're an early adopter of a specific relay, you're awarded a badge. If you're an early adopter or beta tester of a specific Nostr client, you're awarded a badge.
Eventually, badge recipients will be able to display their badges on their profiles. Clients will be able to choose which badges or even which badge providers they want to allow.
Eventually, badges will be reputation based and seem less Shitcoin-esque. Right now, people are just having fun, exploring a new feature.
So, let'em have fun! 🤙
Badges can't be traded. There's no harm in them. Plus, and this is a big plus, there's no fucking Shitcoin associated with them.
(That said, if someone were to charge X amounts of sats for a badge on an external website, there's no stopping anyone from doing this. It's an open protocol. Stay frosty.)
I’m a little conflicted about the idea of selling badges. I don’t think it’s quite like shitcoining because it’s not like you’re being sold a lie that your badge is going to be worth millions someday. I still wouldn’t pay money for one though
630 days ago•••
Agree. They're more like service indicators.

Key takeaway from this weekend: #nostr will be discussed extensively at every single Bitcoin conference this year.
People already using nostr are excited and can’t help but weave it into every discussion.
People who haven’t used it yet are curious and want to learn.
People who underestimated and dismissed it are quickly realizing it can’t be ignored.
